In solar pump projects, the configuration of solar panels is a critical factor affecting system operation performance. Whether for agricultural irrigation, livestock farm water supply or water provision in remote areas, properly sized solar panels not only ensure the pump can start smoothly but also stabilize overall system operation.

 

As a professional solar pump manufacturer, DIFFUL recommends that solar panel configuration should take both total power and voltage parameters matching the pump controller into consideration.

 

First of all, the total power of solar panels is advised to be no less than 1.3 times the rated power of the pump. The calculation formula is as follows:

 

Total Solar Panel Power = Power of Single Solar Panel × Number of Solar Panels

 

For example, a 750W solar pump requires solar panels with a total power of no less than 975W; a 1500W solar pump needs a total solar panel power of at least 1950W. A reasonable power margin ensures stable power supply under varying sunlight conditions and maintains normal pump operation.

 

However, many users overlook that meeting power requirements alone does not guarantee a correct configuration.

 

Two core parameters must be verified when selecting solar panels: VOC (Open-Circuit Voltage) and VMP (Maximum Power Point Voltage).

The total VOC of series-connected solar panels shall not exceed the maximum allowable input voltage of the matched DIFFUL solar pump controller. Meanwhile, the total VMP of series-connected panels must fall within the MPPT operating voltage range specified for the controller. Only when both requirements are satisfied can the controller operate normally and realize Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) to boost solar energy utilization efficiency.

 

Therefore, three parameters need to be calculated when confirming the quantity of solar panels:

 

Whether the total solar panel power reaches 1.3 times or above the pump rated power;

 

Whether the series total VOC stays within the controllers allowable voltage range;

 

Whether the series total VMP meets the controllers operating voltage requirements.
